The largest of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls, Horseshoe Falls, also known as the Canadian Falls, is located on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Horseshoe Falls receives about 85% of the water from the river and is over 173 feet high (53 m) and 2200 feet (671 m) in width. The water going over the crest of the falls is traveling at about 20 mph or 32 km/h, faster than the water on the American side of the falls since there is no island to slow down the current. It is estimated that during the spring season the volume of water going over the Horseshoe Falls is about 600,000 gallons per second. Visitors can view Horseshoe Falls from one of the connect observation points along the Niagara Parkway. Table Rock is the most popular lookout spot, however the mist from the falls is very heavy in this area so be prepared to get wet if this is your vantage point. At night the falls are lit from underneath with colored lights, providing a spectacular sight that can be viewed from many of the high rise hotels in the area.
One of the unique features of Horseshoe Falls is the amount of mist or spray that accumulates at the base of the falls. The Maid of the Mist boat tour takes visitors right up to the falls through the mist, providing a wet but very breathtaking view of the power of the falls. One of the attractions of the Horseshoe Falls is the boat, the Niagara Scow, still shipwrecked on a rock just 700 meters above the falls, where it has been stuck on a rock shoal since 1918.
