In Niagara Falls, Ontario you will find the beautiful Oakes Garden Theater which hosts many concerts each year and serves as an entrance for Queen Victoria Park. Construction of the Oakes Garden Theater began in 1936. It was built as an outdoor amphitheater. Over time the theater has been improved upon.
A fan shaped pergola has been added as have rock gardens, lily ponds and shrub borders that surround formal gardens. The gardens just outside the theater are called the Rainbow Gardens. The plants in the gardens are native to Canada. The gardens are surrounded with limestone and paved paths. There are stairs from the gardens that lead directly down into the Falls.
The Oakes Garden Theater is the entrance for Queen Victoria Park which offers unmatched views of Niagara Falls. From the theater you have panoramic views of both the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. The beauty of the area makes it a popular place for wedding photos.
The Niagara Parks Commission took control of this land in 1933 from Mr. Harry Oakes for whom the theater is named. The property is located at the bottom of Clifton Hill is on the site of the former Clifton Hotel which was destroyed by fire in 1932.
Admission to the Oakes Garden Theater is free and it is open year round for people to enjoy the beautiful views of the Fall. The gardens are most spectacular in late spring, summer and early fall. A trip to the Oakes Garden Theater is never disappointing and even better if you can catch a live performance while you are there.
