The Dufferin Islands are a part of the Natural park system in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It is a popular area covering 10 acres. Despite the popularity this area is quiet and secluded. It features small islands connected by bridges and footpaths. There are 11 islands total. Every year from November to January the Dufferin Islands are the site of the Winter Festival of Lights. During the festival animated light sculptures are set up around the islands. Admission to the park and the festival are both free, although donations are welcomed. The Dufferin Islands are located just across form Horseshoe Falls. The Dufferin Islands were named in 1886 for the Earl of Dufferin. Exploring the islands is the biggest draw of this area. What may look like a small creek running through the area is really the Niagara River on its way to the Horseshoe Falls. Around the islands are many natural wonders, beautiful scenery and interesting sights. You can spend an hour or more lost on the islands, wondering about taking in the serenity of the area. Fish have been introduced in the waters and bird feeders have been hung to encourage local wildlife to frequent the area and making for some interesting sight seeing for visitors. You can also stop along your way and have a picnic in one of the many picnic areas. It is hard to believe that not too far away the falls are rushing at top speeds and here the river runs lazily around these quiet islands.
